Podcast Transcription Jobs: Career Info & Role Description

Contents

Creating a podcast is one thing, promoting it is another. To grow a show’s audience and improve the reach of its content, a podcast team should always include someone for podcast marketing. Podcast Transcription jobs may vary in titles and exact responsibilities. But if you’ve got a knack for marketing and a passion for podcasts, this may be the right career path for you.

What Career Options Are There for Podcast Transcription?

Podcast transcription jobs are all about taking a podcast's great audio content and converting it into written text. The main role you may hear of is that of a transcriptionist, who listens to the audio and accurately types out the content. However with AI tools, often you won’t have to work from scratch, but can work on editing and adjusting transcriptions.

Captioners also transcribe audio but format it for captions or subtitles, especially for video podcasts. Again, there are some AI tools to help out, but we can’t always rely on them, that’s why captioners are hired to edit and double-check that all information is correct.

Some jobs may bear the title of editors or proofreaders. These are podcast team members who review and correct transcriptions for accuracy and grammar. Some organizations may also hire transcription project managers to oversee the entire process, ensuring deadlines are met and quality standards are maintained.

What Skills Do You Need to Work in Podcast Transcription?

While AI tools can give transcribers a leg up, that doesn’t mean there aren’t skills you can perfect to excel in podcast transcription. You’ll need a blend of technical and linguistic skills.

Get familiar with voice-to-text power like Descript, Otter.ai, or your preferred tool. But then you’ll need strong listening skills to accurately catch the words, especially in cases where audio quality may be less than perfect, when speakers have accents different from your own, or speak quickly.

Additionally, it helps to be a good writer, and have great grammar to produce clean, error-free transcriptions that are easy to read and understand.
